my two cents on all things films

Top 10 Movie Trailers of 2006

An adept editor could arguably assemble any person's life on film and make it compelling in a 2 minute piece. All we need are three to five memorable scenes that can be taken (often with no contextual relevance) and quickly cut and overlaid with either a misleading voiceover or "cool" alternative song. We can make anyone's life look like a potentially life-changing viewing experience or at the very least a blockbuster not to be missed. Trailers manipulate the masses. The masses want to be manipulated, primarily because they perfected it. Isn't that why we go to movies? We know that all of the funny scenes are in the preview when the biggest star in the "laugh out loud" or "uproarious" comedy is that guy from "PUNKED" yet we'll still dish out the $10 bucks to see the film. Sometimes even the Trailer can't help with a complete stinker. In that case, we focus on the promise of gratuitous tits and ass. Sex always sells! The movie trailer is the only savior for the unmarketable film which makes even more essential and important today as "great" films are a true commodity. Some (most) movie trailers kick ass, even when the movie doesn't.

Everyone has an opinion on movies..what's yours?

IFILM has a forum for people to upload video blogs on Ifilm's movies channel. With all the crap that's being made by Hollywood, we the paying audience have to speak up. Finally, an open video forum for "us" to voice our opinions on all things films and be featured. Who said Ebert and Ropert were the only authorities on films. You can upload your video blog there and tag it "MTR" and they will showcase and feature the blogs. It can be a commentary, a trailer review, a traditional movie review, a rant, etc. It's all up to you.

Here is a sample:

 Is Scorsese overrated?

Finally Scorcese delivers. The director everyone loves to love. I say, what have you done for me lately? No one gets a free pass on love. I was actually starting to lose faith in him. Gangs of New York and Aviator were acceptable at best. In baseball, three strikes and you're out. In Hollywood, where people tend to fail upwards, it seems once you're in, you can never strike out. Here's the thing with directors, truly great directors. They write their own shit. Ok, so Marty did write Goodfellas and Casino but it was based on Nicholas Pileggi’s source material. Was that really Marty or was it just great source material? Marty didn’t write Raging Bull or Taxi Driver, his earlier greats. So it raises the question, did the writing make Marty or did Marty make the writing? It would have been such a tragedy if he had finally won best director for Gangs or Aviator just out of pity and for not giving receiving an Oscar for Goodfellas. Albeit it late, Hollywood actually did something right for once. Now they just need to pull their heads out of their ass one more time and give Marty the nod for Departed this year.

Marty finally came out of his own shadow with Departed by going back into it. Marty really made his mark in Hollywood with Goodfellas, arguably the best "mob" film of our time so it only makes sense that he would have a rebirth of sorts with a film like Departed. If you haven’t seen it already, it's definitely worth checking out. With Oscar season just around the corner this should be in theaters for a long time.
